the dry grey state highway

The dry grey state highway I drive every day
is lined with bare, spiky trees,
each a multiplication of branches,
rendered so fine as to seem hairy.
They remind me of so many bronchi,
jutting off rows of trachea.
As I round a bend,
one pair of trees coughs up a flock of black birds
which scatter like buckshot
across the dry grey state highway I drive every day.

Nice. Only an ex-chain smoker could use imagery like that.

Caleb, I have to say that i find your blog refreshing in a way few are. Seems like so many just rehash what's already been posted on-line somewhere. It's nice to find original ideas. Seems like they're few and far between these days. Keep it up. Please.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, torch, blogging often feels like a lonely pursuit. Yes, there are a hell of a lot of blogs out there and some do feel quite similar; sorting through them is tall order. If you don’t already, I encourage you to visit some of the blogs under my links. And if you come across any unique blogs you think are worth adding to my blog roll, please let me know. Stop back anytime.

Captain, have we met before?

Man, when you describe those leafless branches as bronchi and the trees coughing up black gobs of birds how can I not assume you're an ex-smoker? I've been there as well.

Actually it was one of the blogs on your links that spurred me to make the comment about rehashed material. Why do we need to have a site that re-posts You Tube offerings on a regular basis? And just because they're VT-based? I see what they're trying to do but it seems like picking worthy content would be doing a greater service to the reader than just picking content because of its geographic origin.

I see your point, torch; there is a novelty about local YouTube posts that sometimes seems to outweigh the quality of content. But I don't think these offerings are neccessarily meant to stand the test of time, just offer quick and random glimpses into the lives of the community. I would agree that some of the clips you see on various Vermont blogs don't seem to be distinctly Vermont-y. They could be Anywhere, USA. And that does raise the question: what's the point?

Captain, I'm glad you're a quitter, too.
